Activities and reports from the GIS Landowner ID Team

Charge
- Once samples are selected, this team will have to collect names, addresses, and telephone numbers for all property owners. We need this information to seek permission to measure plots. Protocol Team is responsible for developing letter and phone script for requesting permission.
- Work with Protocol Team to develop tracking system for notification and permission

Team is Trevor, Sarah, Leha

Work begins 23 Jan, will be on a rolling basis, but we need some confirmed sites in order to begin data collection.

See Project Data page for the file of samples.

FRIDAY FEB. 1 Update

I've emailed the correct spreadsheet to everyone.

When making your JPEGs:

You will need the following layers:
1. Image index
2. Major roads
3. Streets
4. Buffered Plots

*If this doesn't work, add all the files that we added originally.

Once the 'buffered plot points' layer is there, make sure to change its colors and transparency. Right-click the layer, select properties, then use the 'Display' section to make it more transparent (about 65% is good - whatever you want), the 'Symbology' tab will change the circle color, and the 'Display' tab will change the outer ring.

When you can see the plot points, select the binocular icon from the the toolbar. Under
'Features' tab, enter your plot ID in the 'find' field, and select 'bufferedplots' for a map and "ID" for the field (NOT FID). The plot should pop up at the bottom. Right-click and select 'Zoom to.'

Select the identify (i) icon, and click in the center of the circle. Using the image info it should pull up some information, and you'll need the 'product.' Go to http://lnweb02.co.wake.nc.us/gis/gismaps.nsf and enter the first 4 digits of that number in the search field. Go through the list they return and pick out your 2 corresponding color files. Save them, then add them to your map.

ALSO: Column E on our spreadsheet IS the Raleigh Photo ID, so you don't have to look at the information tab necessarily. Whatever is easier for you. You can download them all at once, then add them all, then look for them.

Zoom out and see what you're dealing with, then go to the layout view to make your jpeg. To add street names, right click on the approprate layer (major or minor) and select 'Label Features.' You can label your map with anything you think is pertinent - just add a text box. Give it a north arrow and a scale bar, and you're good to go! (You don't have to redo this everytime - the layout will stay the same, you just have to edit it.)

Fill in your Excel sheet.

Once you're satisfied, "export" the file as a jpeg, save it somewhere, and email it.

THURS. JAN 24th Update
-from Sarah

I'm currently working on our Excel sheet, but there are a few columns of information that will be included that I'd like to tell everyone about. The basic information will be on the "Metadata" sheet in our excel file and our plots are on the other sheet.

UFOREPlots.xls (login required)
NOTE: do NOT put files with property owner names and address on the wiki - send to George for placing in protected space

Column A: Our plot ID number
Column F: The owner's name.
Columns G thru I: Owner's MAILING address.
Column L: Any notes already included as a "property description."
Columns M thru O: The property's PHYSICAL address.

All of the other columns are being kept either for further ID purposes, or because I'm not if they can be helpful or not. I'm e-mailing Dr. Blank, Evan, David, Trevor and Leha regarding those columns.

OUR new columns are located at the end of the original data. This is for the sake of easy add-ons later, and these new columns can be viewed most easily by selecting the entire B column, and selecting Window --> Freeze Panes. This will allow you to scroll to the right without losing your plot ID number. The new columns are as follows:

Column T: Raleigh Photo ID, in the form xxx_xx.
Column U: Trees? - yes or no will be easiest to sort
Column V: Contact? - yes or no
Column W: Notes
Column X: Telephone number
Column Y: Contact name
Column Z: Contact History

As of 11pm, I've been unsuccessful in installing ArcGIS on my home computer, simply because of the size and time required. It has been installing almost continuously for 3 hours, so I suggest that if you can get to campus to work on these you should! If you would like to try the software, you can visit http://www.ncsu.edu/software/download/arcgis.php. I've also heard of, but never used, our Virtual Computing Lab (http://vcl.ncsu.edu). That may be an option, but having tried it, I wasn't able to get it to work for me because of getting the files from the cd to remote computer.

email your jpegs to: raleighufore@gmail.com
subject line: Plot [our number] : [raleigh photo number]

Keep in mind - we want to include any pertinent areas surrounding our buffers: landmarks, rivers, access roads etc.
I also thought it would be beneficial to add the plot ID to a 'legend' of sorts on the layout. I'll work out the details as soon as this program installs and is functioning! (Read: When I go to campus tomorrow.)

PLOT IDs:

Jody: 1-12
Hannah: 13-24 DONE!
Trent: 25-36 DONE!
Bethany: 37-48 DONE!
Sarah: 49-60
Lee: 61-72
Chris: 73-84
Leha: 85-96 DONE!
Trevor: 96+

Plots 14, 26, 52, and 67 are on roads and therefore have no owner ID. We'll need to verify if there are trees regardless!

Coming Soon:

Details on retrieving photos. Tips and info! (Anyone feel free to chime in!)

As of 1/25 10pm I've still been unable to get into ArcMap.

FROM GEORGE:
EVERYONE COLLECTING PHOTOS ...

You've each volunteered to do 12 photos. The GIS layer
you should use to locate the photo under your points is the
Official Sample Plots layer
http://courses.ncsu.edu/nr300/lec/001/wrap/GISData/Bufferedplots.zip
It contains all 111 UFORE points - the field ID is the UFORE plot
number.
This is the ID that you should use to name the jpg file you create
(eg, Plot19.jpg) and as the subject line in your email to the gmail
account (eg, UFORE Plot 19 photo).

From Hannah:
I've started creating the aerial photos of the plots with some success using vcl. I've created a template file for the layout which people can use if they want to for the page layout. I'm emailing my jpgs and the template file to raleighufore@gmail.com and will try to link them on the wiki shortly.

It's easy once you get the hang of it...but the vcl is kind of slow. It would probably go much quicker on a lab computer.
